Can. 1318 Latae sententiae penalties are not to be established, except possibly for certain singularly malicious delicts that either can result in graver scandal or cannot be punished effectively by ferendae sententiae penalties; however, censures, especially excommunication, are not to be established, except with the greatest moderation and only for delicts of special gravity.
